Typing Greek Text

Classical Greek is written with accents, breathings and subscripts which the standard Windows Symbol font cannot reproduce. Greek students can use an assortment of software to type Greek text with the extra jots. One of the simpler methods is a TrueType font called
SPIonic (15.8 kb).

This font uses "zero-width" characters to place breathings, accents, subscripts and elisions in your Greek text. You type a letter, then by hitting a key, you add marks to that letter. The documentation is sufficient.

The pdf files at this site were created with SPIonic. You might wish to view them for a sample of the font's ability.

Greek Grammar Helps

These files are in Adobe pdf format. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat reader, download it for free from Adobe.

They should soon be available in Microsoft Word format for users with the SPIonic font installed on their system.

I am a Greek student, but not a Greek scholar. Besides the occasional typo (the wrong sigma for instance), these files may have flat-out errors. I apologize for the large file sizes - I am working to reduce it.

These maps are based heavily on the efforts of Dr. Konrad, Texas A&M University Department of Classics
