    1. In 1998, American tobacco companies reached a legal settlement with the State of Texas. This agreement promised $17.8 billion to the State in order to offset certain medical costs. If this amount were evenly divided among all Texans, how much would each state citizen receive?

    2. In 1976 Alaskan officials created the "Permanent Fund." The legislation set aside one-fourth of the state's revenues from mineral sales (such as oil) in one account. This money is invested and maintained by the state government, then once a year, the profits are divided among all Alaskans. This annual check is called a "Permanent Fund Dividend." In the year 2000, Alaskans received the largest dividend to date: $1963.86. In that same year, the population of Alaska was 626,932. How much money was paid out through the Permanent Fund that year?

    3. Pioneer 10 is a satellite launched by NASA in 1972. It is now further from the Earth than any other manmade object. On the 30th anniversary of its launch, NASA scientists contacted Pioneer. It took 22 hours and 10 minutes for the message to reach the satellite and return. The message was traveling at a speed of 186,000 miles per second. Pioneer is currently traveling 27,380 mph away from the Earth. In one year, how far away will Pioneer be?
