The Maersk is 140 feet wide, 1138 feet long and can hold 6,600 shipping containers. The ship burns five tons of fuel per hour while under way, and the trip from Hong Kong to California takes 11 days. What is the weight of fuel required for this trip? If each container is 20 feet long, how many miles would they stretch if they were laid end to end? It costs about $900 to send one container. What is the cost for shipping a full boatload of containers?

    2. The Hercules Checkers Tournament is taking place in Walla-Walla Washington, and there are 350 contestants competing for the grand prize. The tournament is a single-elimination competition, so a player is out of the tournament as soon as he loses a game. How many games must be played before a winner is declared?
      (hint: How many people must lose before a winner is declared?)

    3. This year, January first was a Tuesday. What is the probability that a randomly selected day of the year will be a Friday? What is the probability that the first day of a randomly selected month will land on a Monday?
