Archimedes and Exponents
The local mall fills a van with jelly beans and holds a contest to see who can gues the
number of jelly beans in the van. The Greek mathematician Archimedes offeres a strategy
to solve this sort of problem 2300 years ago. In doing so, he also introduced the use of
exponents to decribe large numbers.

TI Graphing Calculator Programs
Download the calculator programs used in Math... First Hand: Activities for Middle
School Math Students.
- PROB.8xp - This program recreates the probability method for
estimating pi featured in the book. The user decides how many trials to conduct. The
calculator then selects random points within a square, counts how many of those points
also lie within the inscribed circle (using the distance formula) and uses the data to
estimate pi.
- PIZZA.8xp - This program for the TI-83+ graphing calculator
family can be used along with the arc sample in the Statistical Sampling lab. The user
enters the length of the radius of an arc and the central angle of the arc, and the
program returns the length of the arc, the area of the arc (which is needed for the lab)
and the area of the circle related to the arc.
